Examining the Potential Travelers in Catchments Areas for Public Transport
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Alex Landex, Stephen Hansen

High-quality public transport systems like light raila have fewer stops than transport systems of lower quality e.g. buses. Because of the fewer stops, it is important that the stops be optimally located. This means that the stops should be located in areas with a high potential of travelers (e.g., in dense housing/workplace/shopping areas), so that as many passengers as possible will use the transport system.

The potential of travelers in the catchments area can be examined using simple overlay analysis based on buffers around the stops. However, this method does not take into account the actual access time to the stop. Using Network Analyst, we have calculated more exact access times to the stops and there by improved the accuracy. Still it is necessary to perform overlay analysis to examine the competition between different lines and thereby increase the potential amount of travelers on the line.
