Developing Downstream/Upstream Navigation Components for Water Quality Analysis
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Kevin Pickren

There are a number of water quality programs funded by the Environmental Protection Agency that support federal and state initiatives for mapping pollution problems. Spatial representations of these datasets are based on the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Major initiatives related to the Clean Water Act include comprehensive integrated assessments under Section 305(b) and TMLD listings required under Section 303(d). These initiatives benefit from having water quality standards use spatial distribution patterns mapped to NHD.

RTI International is prototyping downstream/upstream navigation and data mining components for analyzing information relevant to these water quality programs. These Web-based components utilize Esri's ArcIMS to provide a large audience with cross program analyses drawing on multiple water quality datasets. The goal of the RTI component development is to provide reusable flexible analysis functionality for user-selected areas of interest to support a wide range of watershed-oriented planning and decision-making processes.
