ArcGIS Server Aides USACE with Hurricane National Coastal Databank
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Jennifer Colee, Jon Downey

In 2005, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) started a project for an Implementation Plan and a prototype data warehouse for coastal information. The warehouse uses ArcSDE, ArcIMS, and ArcGIS Server technology to serve both spatial and nonspatial datasets relevant to engineers tasked with preserving our nation's coastline against storm surge. The National Coastal Databank is part of a multimillion dollar effort within the Corps of Engineers aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of coastline protection projects. The goal of the data bank is to provide coastal engineers and scientists with one-stop access to the data and processing tools required for analyzing coastal hydrology issues. The data bank uses a distributed architecture including ArcIMS metadata server to organize data from more than 20 district offices and many federal, state and local agencies.
