GIS and Decision Making for Smaller Organizations
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Amanda Kochanek

Enterprise GIS has clearly arrived, offering large institutions effective integration of data and management. But what about smaller organizations seeking to apply GIS in their decision-making processes? This session explores how three nonprofits have successfully linked GIS to organizational decision making at both the operational and management levels.

The examples, drawn from the work of the nonprofit GIS support group GreenInfo Network, cover planning and managing major trail systems, creating and tracking regional protected lands, and assessing the status of urban land-use policies in cities throughout a metropolitan area. Topics covered include how to choose strategies appropriate to an organization's resources and needs, craft GIS and related database applications, and ensure that these systems are effectively used in the long term.
