Taking Custom Esri Mobile GIS Solutions to the Skies
Track: Application Development
Author(s): Andrew Watson

To improve the planning and management process for the annual Hot Air Balloon Rally, PSTCC has implemented Esri products. PSTCC adopted the use of GIS for the event when an estimated 27,000 spectators attended the first Hot Air Balloon ally in August of 2004. The safety of spectators, pilots, crew members, and the surrounding community are at stake in an event like this. Since the FAA regulates every aspect of hot air ballooning, meeting necessary guidelines is critical to all stages of planning and executing this event. Using GIS to aid in planning, educating and involving the community, minimizing risk, and promoting safety and spatial awareness between pilots, chase vehicles, and event coordinators is the top priority. PSTCC developed navigational charts, animations, a real-time tracking system, and a Mobile Geospatial Communications Unit. Through Esri solutions, event coordinators, pilots, and crew have made the event a huge success.
