Using ArcMap to generate dynamic SVG images
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Kelly McGee

The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) image format is becoming more widely used for adding dynamic graphics in Web-based documents. ArcMap currently can export quality cartographic maps to the SVG image format, but it does not carry across associated feature attributes. This paper will discuss methods for creating SVG images from ArcMap that can be used to dynamically display feature attributes as a user positions the mouse cursor over or clicks on a map feature from within a Web-based document. Feature attributes are extracted directly from the layers feature attribute tables, and the necessary scripts are generated at the time of export. Through methods shown here, users will be able to produce dynamic SVG graphics directly from ArcMap.
