GIS-Based Decision Support System Prototype for Former Semipalatinsk Test Site
Track: Environmental Management

Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) used to be the main nuclear test site in the USSR. The most contaminated territory is the "experimental field" site where 30 ground and 86 aboveground nuclear explosions were conducted. After the STS was closed, neighboring agricultural enterprises got access to pasture lands in this territory. The inhabitants living in this area graze several thousand horses and sheep. Flocks of sheep and horses move about STS territory and enter the experimental field during winter time.

This report presents a GIS-based Prototype Decision Support System (PDSS) for the territory adjacent to the experimental field site. GIS-based PDSS uses the models of radionuclides migration in soil-plants-animals system. It will make it possible to forecast radionuclide content in plants and in products of cattle, thus allowing reasonable decision making regarding the concerned territory.
