Building Web Sites Without Programming: A Configurable ArcIMS Framework
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Vanessa Puchi, Michael Olkin, Michael Terner

The city of Cambridge and town of Amherst have deployed a new ArcIMS software-based technology referred to as the General Purpose Viewer (GPV) that allows the GIS manager to deploy a multiplicity of unique ArcIMS Web sites from a single code base. The GPV capitalizes on the .NET framework and ASP .NET as well as the power of the underlying database to allow unique Web sites to be authored simply by modifying a suite of configuration tables. In addition, complex communication with the underlying database, including managing one-to-many relationships, is achieved through the use of stored procedures. The GPV capitalizes on Ajax-based communication between the client and server to provide both very fast performance and extensive functionality including online map markup. This presentation will focus on case studies from Cambridge and Amherst describing both the technology and the process of configuring and deploying individual Web sites.
