Use of GIS Toward the Realization of Hydrogeology of Africa
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Bisrat Lemma

Currently, gathering homogeneous earth science data into a modern information system at a scale of the African continent seems to be vital. A complementary Africa GIS network project played an important role by creating an open partnership with African Geological Surveys to share update and promote data regarding geology, hydrogeology and related natural resources of the continent.

GIS software, particularly ArcView, was used as major tools to produce standard hydrogeological maps and build a database. Using ArcView, querying of data, use of flexible editing and standard layout formats were made easy for smooth data exchange among partners for input toward the realization of hydrogeology of Africa at 1:5,000,000 scale.
