Providing Public Access to King County GIS Data
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Michael Jenkins

King County, Washington, develops and maintains a large amount of GIS data to meet the business needs of the departments and divisions within the county government. As a public agency, it has made a point to provide access to this valuable data to other state and local government agencies as well as to the general public utilizing data sharing agreements, standard data CDs, and Internet distribution. In the past five years, King County has made a substantial amount of this data available through the Internet by utilizing ArcIMS. This service has proven to be so popular that the county has received more than two million user sessions on its mapping server in 2005. This success assures that ArcIMS is part of the county's long-range strategy for providing public access to King County GIS data.
