GIS/Web Development Supporting Interagency Coordination on the Las Vegas Wash
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Art Ehrenberg

The Las Vegas Wash (Wash) is the final link in the Las Vegas Valley's water supply. It carries the valley's excess water through the wetlands on its way to Lake Mead. The Wash has served as an attraction for people for thousands of years. Archaeological sites suggest that the area's water, plant and animal resources made it an attractive habitation area since around AD 600. As a riparian corridor, the Wash is an important ecological resource for Southern Nevada. The Wash provides habitat to more than 300 fish and wildlife species. The Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee was formed in October 1998. Consisting of 28 members (federal, state, local and private) it brings together all interested parties to address watershed and related issues. GIS and Web development has played a key role in the coordination and facilitation of this committee and its ability to successfully identify and solve problems relating to the Wash.
