GIS in Public Health Informatics
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Jared Shoultz, Guang Zhao

Public Health Informatics is a growing field that deals with the integration and leveraging of distributed information systems, custom applications, data, and specific program area knowledge and concepts. During this integration process, it is very crucial to consider GIS as a forethought rather than an afterthought. This presentation will address the issue of Public Health Informatics and GIS as they have been conceptualized and implemented in the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Topics covered will include systems integration, server-based GIS, GIS organization, and Web- and desktop-based GIS initiatives in the context of the overarching area of Public Health Informatics. There will be a discussion of the location of GIS within an organization as well as the relationship between GIS and conventional information technology (IT). An emphasis will be placed on "enterprise-wide" development, multiple-use systems, and the demonstrated spatial needs of users throughout the agency.
