Using Geocoding to Improve Data Quality
Track: Electric and Gas
Author(s): Antonio Gomide, Gerson Kissula

At Copel, UTM coordinates have been a long time acquaintance. This electric distribution utility (3,000,000 customers) has been building a database with electric network distribution data since 1975 when mainframes dominated. Amazing is that since then, UTM coordinates are being added to the records in the company's Customer Information System. One of the problems is that, at that time, there was no easy way to visualize the electric network, so some mistakes made in typing the coordinates got by undetected. As Copel is moving from another GIS technology to Esri's, we are able to use new tools like geocoding. In this paper we describe the process used to compare the coordinates provided by geocoding with the coordinates that are maintained as attributes in customer records.
