Southwest Florida Watershed Management Plans: Experience in Automation and Innovation
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Gordon McClung, Prachee Gupta, Yoav Rappaport

Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) is performing a watershed management plan for the Cypress Creek (Pasco County, FL), Withlacoochee River (Hernando County, FL), and Roosevelt Creek (Pinellas County, FL) watersheds. Two watersheds are currently mostly rura, but population pressure is being felt. Floodplain delineation, BMP recommendations, and surface water assessment are components of the study that are used to make recommendations for future development.

Several automation routines have been custom built in ArcGIS and ArcInfo to assist in this effort. GIS ArcPad automation for storm water feature collection, subbasin parameterization, floodplain delineation, and water quality assessment are discussed in this paper. Information from the GIS is then used as input/output in the AdICPR Hydrologic and Hydraulic model. Migration to a geodatabase is also expected.

Finally, the authors discuss lessons learned and opportunities for further automation as well as areas where automation techniques may not adequately define the watershed.
