Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Juna Goda Papajorgji, Timothy Clark

In partnership with the Center for Environmental Policy at the University of Davis, California, the GIS Division in Alachua County, Florid, has developed an Ecological Evaluation Model. This model identifies, assesses, evaluates, weights, and prioritizes the green infrastructure network of the county. It creates a strategic framework for development, protection, and restoration of sensitive lands characterized on ecological and natural resource relationships and functions.

The model uses more than 50 spatial layers. Its core runs on ArcGIS 9.1/Spatial Analyst Desktop. A light version of the model runs from the Web via a dialog between ArcGIS and an open source Internet nap server. This model is not proprietary, and it subscribes to the General Public License (GPL). A specialized Web site hosts the model and offers free access to the source code; to input and output data and metadata; to a user guide; and to maps, reports, and other related documentation.
