Development of Second Generation National Land-Cover Map with Decision Tree
Track: Remote Sensing Imagery
Author(s): Sheikh Nazmul Hossain, Collin Homer

MultiResolution Land Characterization 2001 (MRLC 2001) is a Federal consortium designed to create a second-generation National Land Cover product after 1992. Numerous algorithms and potential methods were reviewed for this nationwide Land-cover data. This paper will discuss the methods of creating National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2001 products in state of Utah. This new NLCD product optimally classifies many database layers in a single step, with the ability to document this relationship in a rule base that was highly desirable. A commercial decision tree classification model is used for this product. ERDAS IMAGINE and ArcGIS spatial analysis tools are used to create training pools for model development. This paper will show the latest land-cover map for Utah created by this approach. This will also demonstrate how this approach is repeatable in other potential applications.
