Tribal Forestry and the Use of Technology
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Ben Butler

Working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to inventory the fire potential of tribal lands, the Student Conservation Association has been working on a national intern-based project to aid in data collection and management. Utilizing ArcPad technology combined with Trimble Recons, students work within tribal forests collecting vital data to be used in supporting proper forest management and wildland fire mitigation. The program concentrates on using the newest technologies in the field and works toward training the tribal employees in the necessary techniques to carry the work into the future.
