Using Mapdex to Discover the Geospatial Web
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Jeremy Bartley

Mapdex (www.mapdex.org) is a comprehensive search engine for existing geodata on the Internet. Developed by the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas, the portal is searchable by servers, spatial layers, and attribute fields. Specialists in any number of industries can locate and use readily available data for their particular needs. Mapdex can be used to search massive holdings of geospatial data. Mapdex provides an index of publicly available ArcIMS services comprising approximately 2,000 servers, serving approximately 35,000 map services, and containing approximately 500,000 GIS layers. It brings together a previously disparate network of GIS services, searchable from one location that can be tapped into by the GIS community using just a few keyword searches. Mapdex can be searched within ArcMap, a Web browser, or the user's own development environment. The spatial data infrastructure has already been built. Use Mapdex to help you discover what is out there.
