Benthic Habitat Tracking in the Orange County Coastal Environment
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Peter Bigley

This project utilizes GIS to detect changes in benthic and demersal fish populations in the San Pedro Channel. The work was carried out for the Ocean Institute at Dana Point, California. The Ocean Institute is heavily involved in gathering sample data on the Benthic and Demersal species native to the Southern California coast in support of State environmental research. This GIS will enable the Ocean Institute to use its sample data to detect changes to the populations of the various marine species and to determine the level of correlation this change has with ocean temperature change for the same time period. The client will be able to produce maps depicting the location of the sample points and simple statistical charts measuring the level of correlation between changes in frequency of species occurrence and changes in ocean temperature. These can be output in either paper or digital format and be updated in near real-time from the client's server. The maps and charts are designed to be presented to an audience comprised of Elementary through High school aged people which supports the client's stated objective to inspire all generations, through education, to become responsible stewards of our oceans.
