Tsunami Impact and Recovery Modeling in the Indian Ocean Region
Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response
Author(s): Chris Chiesa, Stanley Goosby, Jeff Logan, Ursula Glick

Immediately following the catastrophic great Sumatra earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami, the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC) began supporting humanitarian response operations throughout the Indian Ocean basin. As emphasis has shifted to recovery and reconstruction, PDC continues to monitor impacted areas-generating information that will be useful in developing and deploying tsunami detection and warning systems throughout the region.

Accordingly, raster modeling of the event itself has been used by PDC analysts to support a detailed assessment of tsunami impacts and recovery processes including damage-level classifications and warning time requirements. Animations were also created from model results to assist with data visualization. Initial tsunami model results, developed in collaboration with researchers from NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, have included depictions of wave height, speed, and travel time.
