Drought Severity Mapping through Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques
Track: Water Resources

In the present study, Gubbi taluk (tahsil) of Tumkur district, Karnataka, state which is drought prone, has been selected for drought assessment. The objectives of this work are to: (1) create a GIS database involving drought influencing parameters for drought analysis and (2) develop a GIS-based drought model to generate the seasonwise drought map at the village level.

Drought assessment is carried out using 17 parameters with the help of remotely sensed data, meteorological data and other published information. The land-use/land-cover maps are prepared by adopting a supervised classification technique that uses Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC). The layers are ranked using Saaty's pairwise comparison method. GIS-based drought severity models are developed to generate drought severity maps by integrating the thematic layers in spatial modeler (a built-in model in ArcView). The drought is identified seasonwise for each village from the drought severity maps.
