Palanterra--Web-Based eGEOINT at NGA
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Mark Riccio

Today, advances in GIS and Web technology have enabled spatial information to emerge from cloistered single purpose data stores and thick client exploitation to organizations delivering geospatial information/analysis to customers via open web services and exploited via analytically enabled Web sites--a challenge to traditional acquisition and production processes. NGA has responded to this challenge with Palanterra. Palanterra unites NGA and its customer base, for the first time, through an integrated GIS architecture for Web-based dissemination, analysis, and visualization.

Palanterra is a family of spatially and analytically enabled Web-based interfaces designed to describe, assess, and depict physical features and geographically referenced activities, referred to collectively as geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). Palanterra is designed around the integration of disparate stores of spatial data (via standards-based Web services [OGC, SOAP-XML, etc.] streaming binary, file transfer protocol, or direct spatial database connectivity) into a synoptic view--a common, spatially and analytically enabled operational picture.
