Special Security Events: Broadening Community Partnerships
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Marlene Sarjeant, Chris Riopelle

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) Office of Americas works diligently to provide near real-time geospatial intelligence at the national down through tactical levels required by Department of Defense and law enforcement agencies. Following 9/11, NGA and the U.S. Geological Survey implemented a collective, interoperable geospatial data infrastructure supporting homeland security and emergency readiness, response, and recovery efforts. NGA has used geospatial intelligence for planning and on-site support for more than 25 special security events since 2002 including major sporting and political events. Our support has grown to provide near real-time access for customers via Palanterra, a browser-based interface. Palanterra provides an analytical and spatially enabled common operating picture allowing federal decision makers to assess and respond to domestic threats. Continued development of our support capabilities and collaboration within NGA and between our colleagues/customers are key to maximizing the effectiveness of resources and capabilities devoted to homeland security.
