Geographical Underwriting-Risk Management within Munich Reinsurance Company
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Michaela Unsinn

The insurance industry is constantly seeking new ways of improving the analysis and control of its risk exposures, and this is especially the case since 11 September 2001. However, it's not only man-made perils and the growing threat from terrorism that call for enhanced risk management but also natural catastrophe trends, which are continually worsening.

The ability to manage catastrophe risks depends very much on the degree of familiarity with the risk situation, the risk concentration, and the lines of business involved in a certain area. To assess the overall risk better and to control or optimize the exposures, insurers and reinsurers must be in a position to give a competent answer to the question, "Where are the risks?" Geographical underwriting is a promising solution since the markedly different risk situation now confronting the industry makes a detailed spatial observation of risks indispensable.
