Paper
A Spatially Enabled Event Management System, City of Cape Town
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Pieta Le Roux

This paper discusses a spatially enabled system that has being designed within the City's Water Services Technical Operations Centre. This solution is tightly integrated into business processes and manages all incoming events generated within the City for Water Services. These events are spatially referenced, classified, and stored in the Geodatabase. The system has a set of rules which guides what response is initiated for each event (Standard Operating procedures, SOP's). In addition to the SOP's each of the spatially enabled events have rules to analyse spatial patterns (e.g. water bursts). The system is tightly integrated into the City's existing GIS architecture and harvests the data through a map service. It also integrates with the City's ERP (SAP)system, Tetra Trunking Radio & Scada networks as well as GPS enabled vehicles. It therefore ensures one point of access for all events and consistent responses to events within the City.
