MyGRC.com - The Power of a One-Stop-Web-GIS-Shop
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Donald Richards

Georgia Power has been contributing to the growth and prosperity of the state of Georgia through its Community & Economic Development Organization since 1927. C&ED developed the Georgia Business Location Center in 1985 and established a full GIS in 1995. The first web-based application went on-line in 1997, followed by a re-engineering of non-web applications in 1997-98. In 2004, a "Creative Team" determined that the rapidly changing economic development environment, existing applications and cumbersome maintenance procedures presented obstacles to the continued long-term success of C&ED and that a single, comprehensive web-based application was needed. Rolta International and Orion Technology were contracted to implement the OnPoint web-GIS software, built on Esri's ArcIMS, and create a one-stop-web-GIS-shop. Prospective businesses can access data relating to nearly 8000 industrial sites, buildings and office properties, as well as demographics, employment, taxes, incentives, labor and wage-data. Georgia Power C&ED's one-stop-web-GIS-shop has truly harnessed the "Power" of web-GIS.
