Paper
Developing a Web-Based Geospatial Metadata Search Tool and Relational Database
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Kit Na Goh, Keith Weber, Daniel Ames

The GIS Center at Idaho State University, a member of the Geography Network, allows the public free access to approximately 11,000 GIS datasets stored within its spatial library. Unfortunately, the current Web-based search engine is not adequate as it does not reveal datasets stored within ZIP files (the bundling and compression method used). As a result, visitors are required to browse the spatial library's directory of folders to find data. In order to facilitate better discovery and delivery of geo-spatial data, we are developing and deploying a relational database containing geospatial metadata documentation for all datasets within the spatial library and an intelligent Web interface to help the GIS Center's visitors more efficiently find required geospatial data. This presentation will describe the relational database design and the process followed to import the XML-based metadata documents into the database.
