Afton Mountain and I-77 Corridor Crash Studies
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Kevin Campbell

Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, Inc. (HSMM) partnered with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to convert automobile crash data from a tabular format to a GIS for two sections of Virginia interstate renowned for poor weather and visibility. These studies helped HSMM's transportation engineers pinpoint problem areas by portraying the data spatially, so that a variety of improvements could be made to the highway corridors. HSMM's GIS Department geolocated five years' worth of crash data along road centerlines in each direction of travel for Interstate 64 near Afton Mountain, and Interstate 77 between Interstate 81 and the North Carolina border. The crashes were then symbolized based on numerous criteria including the number of vehicles involved, the weather conditions at the time of the crash, and the type of accident that occurred. This paper also examines the improvements made in technique between the initial I-64 project and the I-77 project.
