Providing Firefighters Mobile Access to Mission-Critical Information
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Keith Silverman, Todd Brown

Firefighters require rapid access to information in emergencies. Often, initial size-up of an incident occurs when firefighters arrive on the scene. This allows only seconds for critical risk management, strategic, and tactical decisions to be made. For years, fire departments have relied on pre-incident planning to record mission-critical information about a hazard before an incident occurs. Typically printed on paper and stored in large binders on the apparatus, this system has proven to be somewhat ineffective and inefficient. Updates to the binders are troublesome and firefighters find the system cumbersome to use en-route to an incident. This case study will describe the genesis of an information intensive mobile system, using the power of GIS, to transition pre-incident planning from paper to mobile computers. The case study will discuss the completed needs assessment, the critical criteria of the system and available data, and the implementation of the system into the apparatus.
