Delta Island Inter-relationships: ArcGIS Schematics
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): David Hansen

The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California is composed of a set of islands and adjacent areas which are home to over 800,000 people. Changing climatic, hydrologic, environmental, seismic, and land use conditions jeopardize the Delta's natural and human infrastructure. Failure of Delta levees can have devastating consequences on farms, communities, roads, railways, power and fuel transmission lines, water conveyance and quality, and the local and State economy. This paper examines the use of ArcGIS Schematics to portray and communicate interconnections and relationships between the islands to policy makers and the public. This includes identifying what other islands may be affected by the failure of a levee on one of the islands in an interactive environment.
