ArcIMS and Customized COTS Solution for Forest Management in Ohio
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Chad Sanders, David Gilbert, Thomas Birch

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ONDR) Division of Forestry (DOF) recognized that technology and data management are critical to sustainable forest management in Ohio. In the past there were gaps in data collection, a lack of data standardization, difficulties in sharing data with staff and public, and a need for a comprehensive program for sustainable forestry and Green certification on state forests.

The DOF sought a Web-based, customized COTS solution to managing state forests for forestry purposes. An off-the-shelf forest management program was customized and provided to agency personnel throughout the state on a secure terminal service network. A multi-tiered system now provides staff with the appropriate capabilities to schedule harvests, predict growth, and provide for recreational activities.

An ArcIMS Web site was developed to enable the DOF staff and public to access data on the Web. This data included specialized tools for specifically defined groups.
