How to Create a Web-Based Subdivision Development Application
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Michael Shean

It is the responsibility of The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission located in Prince George's County, Maryland to review and provide comment on each submitted subdivision development application. Historically, staff throughout the department relied on a database to check the status of each application by either querying the database or by generating predefined reports. However, the database lacked the ability to satisfy requests for displaying development applications on a map. Three years ago, the Commission began developing user requirements that would satisfy staff mapping needs. The result was the creation of a Web-based Development Activity Monitoring System Geographic Information System (DAMS/GIS) application. This presentation will discuss how the user requirements were defined, the development timeline, obstacles that were encountered, lessons learned, and the expected and unexpected benefits. This presentation will end with a live demonstration of the Web application.
