Mobile GIS Applications in U.S. Surface Coal Mining Reclamation
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Robert Welsh

Through the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Technical Innovations and Professional Services Branch, agency field offices and SMCRA State and tribal programs are provided with sophisticated mobile GIS software and hardware to adequately assess any impacts resulting from mining activities and to share data with the industry. The Mobile GIS Initiative includes ArcPad 7, GPS Analyst, and ArcMap deployed on a variety of platforms ranging from ruggedized and standard PDAs to Tablet PCs, and a wide range of GPS engines from PC card to Bluetooth-enabled units. Functional areas supported by mobile GIS include wetlands delineation, topsoil and spoil characterization, blasting effects, determination, bond adequacy assessment, minesite navigation, sample site positioning and reoccupation, vegetation monitoring, and acid mine drainage seep location. A critical component to the success of the Mobile GIS Initiative has been development and delivery of extensive hands-on training in ArcPad 7 on multiple platforms.
