Paper
GIS Techniques for Avalanche Mapping and Snow Science Observations
Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere
Author(s): Douglas Scott

Until recently almost all avalanche and snowprofile data observations were recorded on hard copy and or did not have a spatial component. With the current advances in technology this has become affordable and reasonable to implement. This paper will present a geodatabse model based on the 2004 US National snow and avalanche observation guidelines and techniques for building avalanche atlas maps, sourced from newly collected and legacy data. It will also present the integration of a digital snowpit profile program for the pocket pc (demonstrating new ruggized Pocket PCs) with ArcPad 7 and GPS for the collection of avalanche path and snow observation data that will have a spatial reference. These advances will make it possible to bring snow and avalanche observations and data into a GIS for referencing, modeling, forecasting, and then sharing via the Internet.
