Using GIS to Help Private Landowners Develop Responsibly
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Wes Simmonds

Many private landowners are often faced with leaving their ownership legacy to the hands of future developers. The nature and beauty of the landscape that they were attracted to is what they want to pass on to future generations. However, encroaching economic development pressures often sacrifices the intrinsic qualities of a landscape to the highest bidder. Using GIS to understand the landscape, its unique and rare features can mitigate the raw forces of unrelenting development.

Utilizing ILARIS, the Intrinsic Landscape Aesthetic Resource Information System, an ArcGIS model and ArcGlobe as strategic analysis tools can give property owners an understanding of the larger landscape and its connection with natural features through a three dimensional simulation. These tools can optimize development opportunities with a sensitive accord to natural and cultural processes.
