Making the Business Case for Metadata
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Sharon Shin, Lynda Wayne

After years of promoting metadata as a means for others to discover your geospatial data, it has become apparent that the true benefit of quality geospatial metadata is the ability to discover and manage your OWN geospatial data. In addition, robust metadata can be a valuable means of managing geospatial data projects. Metadata that is developed as a component of the data, integrated into the workflow process, and populated with useful information can enhance geospatial data discovery and re-use, maintenance and update, accountability, and liability, and actively support project planning, monitoring, deliverables, and collaboration. This is not your mother's metadata.
