NCDOT Integrates an Enterprise Linear Referencing System with Esri GIS
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Robert McKitrick Jr., Elizabeth Roman, Leo Martin

The NCDOT integrated a tabular Linear Referencing System (LRS) application with GIS tools to achieve high levels of integration flexibility and data reliability. The tabular LRS is maintained by the LRS Access and Reporting System (LARS)--a service oriented architecture (SOA) application. This system provides a SOAP Web services API allowing an application programmed in any language supporting SOAP to integrate with the tabular LRS. A Web-based user interface was provided as an interim application prior to having a complete GIS solution and to support users who do not have expertise using GIS tools. A GIS-based user interface was provided to integrate the linework with the tabular LRS data and will be enhanced to provide a full GIS based solution.
