Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management

The decrease in the demand of domestic timber and the increase in operational costs have been stagnated Japanese forestry. It is also indicated that forests lose multi-functional roles as the abandoned forests increase.

In order to restore the multifunctional roles of forests, it is necessary to make economically practical plan of forest operation.

For this purpose, Yamaguchi Agricultural Public Corporation developed the Yarding and Harvesting Cost Estimation System using ArcGIS.

This system helps users to estimate the income and expenditure of timber production on the condition of the most profitable harvest time, using the customized functions with additional operator's knowledge.

As a consequence, this enables users (1) to select the forest sites, which should be included in the same operating unit in order to minimize the total cost of timber production, (2) to make the most economically efficient operation plan based on the estimation.
