Case Study: Sanitary Sewer System Mapping Program
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Mark Hargrave, Mohamed Kacem

The City of Newport News' Department of Engineering and Department of Public Works both use informative data to make decisions related to sewer system maintenance and improvements. Effective presentation and visualization of the spatial characteristics of the sewer system provide city engineers and GIS staff with more understanding and insight into such data. To meet the city engineers' expectations of day-to-day business processes (Map Production, Data Sharing, Data Dissemination, Data Update, etc.) and complies with various regulations (EPA, GASB 34, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System); the City needs a robust and scalable GIS for mapping, managing, modeling, and maintaining its Sewer System infrastructure. Gannett Fleming and GeoDecisions have been working with City of Newport News for the past four years to map its entire Sanitary Sewer System.
