Spatially Enabling a BI Dashboard
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): William Ivey, Darrell Massengill, Eric Short

A Business Intelligence (BI) dashboard provides a high-level overview of the current state of an enterprise. Like the dashboard of an automobile where it takes just a glance to determine the remaining fuel, speed, engine temperature, and other vital operating information, a BI dashboard should convey the critical information in an easily comprehendible fashion. Typical BI dashboards consist of various components that depict summarized data of key business indicators utilizing two-dimensional charts. These charts display the 'who, what, and when', but if the data contains spatial information, then the 'where' will likely be overlooked. Adding a mapping component completes the dashboard by providing the ability to understand the spatial aspect. This paper will explore the creation and use of spatially-enabled BI dashboards, demonstrated with examples using integrated software from SAS and Esri. These examples will include use cases from both the business and scientific communities.
