Semi-automated Methods for Land-Use Land Cover Data Updates
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): John Stachelhaus, Sudha Maheshwari

The State of Rhode Island uses land use and land cover datasets for managing their land resources. The current data in use are more than 10 years old. In the last 10 years, there have been significant changes in the use of land, necessitating the update of these data. However, traditional methodology (based on manual photo interpretation and hand digitizing) is not only time-consuming and expensive, but also open to inconsistencies. The State contracted Sanborn to use its semi-automated methodologies to update the land use land cover data. This presentation will discuss the methodology used and the results obtained for the State of Rhode Island. The strengths and weaknesses of the delineation will be discussed.
