The Multi-faceted Roles of GIS in Advancing Dam Safety
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Author(s): Carlos Carriaga

The emergence of GIS and its ever-growing use in engineering in the recent years have continued to transform the landscape by which engineering decisions and analyses are made. GIS technology offers dam safety engineers and officials a powerful tool in performing their critical roles as public servants called to safeguard lives and protect properties from damages associated with dam safety issues. The developed presentation material showcases the multi-faceted roles of GIS in aiding almost every discipline involved in dam safety. They are: hydrology, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, geology, geomorphology, archeology, hydro-meteorology, and public safety just to name a few. This paper highlights the benefits of GIS to the experts of these fields in performing their crucial roles and tasks as dam safety team members.
