Philadelphia Water Department: Maintaining Our Geometric Network Water and Sewer
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Roxanne Gregorio, Larry Szarek, Rami Raad

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) completed a detailed GIS data conversion of their system in 2004. The data conversion included converting more than 250,000 source documents into a seamless geometric network for their infrastructure. Prior to completing the data conversion a detailed maintenance procedure was developed to ensure that the Philadelphia Water Department investment in data was not lost and so that all applications based on the GIS would utilize the most accurate and up to date data. Multiple applications were developed in GIS to ensure efficiency of updating existing GIS infrastructure data and to ensure that all of the geometric network rules were applied. The presentation will cover the GIS applications that were developed, the resources that were necessary to support the maintenance of the data, and the additional data needed to support new applications.
