Employing the Network Analyst Extension
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Stanimira Bourova, Eric Smith

The Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX) provides a transit service for Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties in Florida. In 2005 the agency invested in developing a Comprehensive Operation Analysis for future transit service development in the next 30 years. The study recommended adding approximately 60 new routes to serve areas identified as placing increased transportation demands on the system in the past 10. With any new route proposal for funding LYNX has to justify its feasibility and we found that Network Analyst is the tool we need. By adding demographic and proximity characteristics to a street network dataset we will be able to suggest different route schemas and target the service to the most populated or rural areas, to areas with high concentration of employment or to low income areas. This will allow for greater flexibility and accountability in utilizing funding in order to achieve our service expansion goals.
