GIS: Moving Utility and Facility Data from Deskdrawer to Desktop
Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
Author(s): Bobby Burrow, Steve Lacy

The University of Wisconsin - Madison (20 million square feet of building space, 60,000 students and staff) has been developing mapping base data and geographic information systems (GIS) for the last several years. As part of this process, the University has mapped and inventoried campus infrastructure through a variety of means, including photogrammetry, survey, as-built drawings, and anecdotal evidence. The result of these projects has been a dramatic increase in the amount of accessible infrastructure data for a wide range of end users throughout the University. Mapping data is used for a host of planning, maintenance, and capital projects. While the new map data has proven to be invaluable on numerous efforts, it has also presented many challenges. This presentation discusses these ongoing challenges, which include financing and staffing GIS projects, maintaining data in multiple GIS and CAD environments, and designing projects that work for everyone.
