Utilizing GIS to Develop a Municipal Trail System
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Curtis Copeland

Over the past five years, the City of Branson, GIS Division, has been utilizing GIS software and spatial datasets, to assist in the development of not only a Citywide trail system, but also an "area-wide" system that will link Branson with its neighboring communities. There are several purposes for the development of this trail system. These include, providing access to the natural and scenic amenities of the area to foot and bicycle traffic, preserving corridors of natural, cultural, and historical interest for present and futures generations of outdoor enthusiasts, and to provide a healthy and educational pastime for the residents of not only the City of Branson, but the residents and visitors of a large multi-county area as well. The City of Branson GIS Division has utilized a number of spatial technologies, including GIS software, GPS equipment, digital aerial photography, digital planimetric and topographic data, and land parcel geodatabases.
