NEWGIN: Newark Geographic Information Network and Enterprise GIS Implementation
Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
Author(s): Christopher Darby, Indrani Bose

City of Newark needed an Enterprise wide GIS system to utilize geo-spatial information as an invaluable tool in the analysis of data for strategic planning in all city departments. NEWGIN is built on an industry-leading platform that includes ArcGIS, ArcSDE, and ArcIMS as well as Orion's OnPoint software. The city agencies are benefiting from using this Internet/intranet-based Web application (NewView) in areas that relate to managing items such as parcel information, school locations, libraries, hospitals, census information, disease trends, surveillance and prevention, trends in animal control cases to name a few. This presentation will focus on the city's business processes and initiative in achieving this goal successfully and share thoughts on the challenges of sharing distributed data in the enterprise GIS, and finding new avenues to make the best use of GIS technology for the city in making better decisions for its residents.
