Innovative Techniques for Floodplain Mapping and Water Quality Analysis
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Gordon McClung

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is performing water management plans for watersheds in both urban and rural areas with a fast growing population, including hydrologic and hydraulic characterization of the watershed to establish current conditions and make recommendations for future development. In this context, Parsons has developed procedures for floodplain delineation in flat areas such as Florida's Southwest watersheds. GIS tools were developed using ArcObjects and model builder to automate the process; additionally, VBA and VBScript procedures were also customized to extract information from 3D TINs. As part of this study, Parsons has developed a GIS based Non-Point Source Pollutant Loading Model. The model calculates gross non-point source pollutant loads and allows screening of best management practices facilities for pollutant load reduction. The model output can be utilized by ArcMap to delineate areas and attributes of non-point source loads and assess the pollutant load reduction benefits of implemented BMPs.
