Expansion of an Advanced Enterprise GIS-Based Asset Management System
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Timothy DeSalvo, Kirk McClurkin

Since the City of Newport News, Department of Public Works implemented a GIS-centric Asset Management system in 2004, we have been very busy. As a result of our rapid and successful implementation, interest from other City departments arose. Within one year, Public Works was tasked with and successfully implemented Customer Service Requests in six additional departments. The largest of these departments, and the one most closely related with our department was Engineering. We have now fully implemented them, including work orders. This required major update of the Streets GIS model to incorporate data not previously captured. Not only did the GIS portion prove challenging, but also the entire workflow as well. We had to achieve globalization of our configuration and train them in concepts and practices. All of these tasks had to be successfully completed with limited time availability and on a tight deadline. Codes Compliance is now interested.
