Enterprise GIS in Wastewater Management
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Steve DeWilde

The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) is responsible for the collection, treatment, and disposal of wastewater in northern and central Orange County, California. With a Fountain Valley reclamation plant, a treatment plant in Huntington Beach, 600 miles of sewers, and an ocean monitoring program, opportunities for GIS thrive. Enterprise GIS has implemented applications that help safeguard underground utilities, manage permits, and enable sea-floor sediment visualizations. We acquired additional desktop software licensing, selectively distributing the software to new users, and initiated a training program. Enterprise GIS has planned, designed, implemented and enhanced browser-GIS applications and a geodatabase to support future external data systems integration, GIS data maintenance, display, and analysis. A geometric network was constructed as well to allow determinate flow tracing. The District GIS continues to grow in users, user capabilities, and applications throughout the organization. This presentation will detail the successes, opportunities, and challenges managing an agency-wide GIS.
